It’s difficult to know where to start when unravelling Marshmello’s year: 2019 has been a string of unique, ambitious, daring and sometimes quite absurd heights. Take the fact that his 2018 hit ‘Happier’ spent an entire year at No.1 in the Billboard Dance Chart — a feat that’s never happened before. Take his in-game concert on Fortnite Battle Royale. Taking place way back in February, it was the first of its kind and a record in gaming history with 10.7 million fans locked in live. That’s not counting those live streaming through Twitch. The scale of this is incredible and means Marshmello — real name Chris Comstock — may well have technically played to more people this year than the whole Top 100 DJs top 10 combined.

Aussie bass star Alison Wonderland has been busy as a bee throughout 2019, challenging herself creatively, setting records and ticking off bucket-list items left, right and centre. She achieved a personal goal by playing the incredible open-air Red Rocks Amphitheatre just outside Denver, Colorado, selling out two shows and becoming the first woman in electronic music to do so in the process. Wonderland (real name: Alexandra Sholler) also tells us she adapted her show to include more live elements, and consist of 90% her own material, “which was a very scary leap to take, pushing myself as an artist.”

Alongside his DJ and production work, and his label Dim Mak — plus the endeavours of his Aoki Foundation, raising money for brain research — Aoki began to expand his chain of restaurants, Pizzaoki. Following in the footsteps of his late father Rocky Aoki, who founded the popular Japanese eatery Benihana, the DJ launched Pizzaoki outlets in San Diego and Oakland, with further restaurants opening in Las Vegas, Chicago and Long Beach too.
